Summary

The triumphant conclusion to the magnificent Liveship Traders series。

The dragon, Tintaglia, released from her wizardwood coffin, flies high over the Rain Wild River。 Below her, Reyn and Selden have been left to drown, while Malta and the Satrap attempt to navigate the acid flow of the river in a decomposing boat。

Althea and Brashen are sailing the liveship Paragon into pirate waters in a last-ditch attempt to rescue the Vestrit family liveship, Vivacia, who was stolen by the pirate king, Kennit; but there is mutiny brewing amongst their ragtag crew, and in the mind of the mad ship itself。

And all the while the waters around the Vivacia are seething with giant serpents, following the liveship as she sails to her destiny 。 。 。

Good ending to a good series。

Megan

Mixed feelings。 I really enjoyed the first two books of this series but this one fell short for me。 I struggled with the serpent chapters and did not understand why Serilla was even given a POV。 The constant political discussion were incredibly boring。 Needless to say, I’m not unhappy with how/where everyone ended up。

Kina

Wow。 When people say that Robin Hobb writes character driven stories, they mean it x1000。

That is how you end a book。 I would give this more then 5* if I could。 I loved it。 The serpents, the dragon, the ships and the characters were all connected to each other beautifully。 Paragon has the best arch in this trilogy but Malta and Kennits come close but for very different reasons。

Liveship Traders TrilogySince this was a re-read of books I read nearly twenty years ago, I decided to review the three books together。 The first volume, Ship of Magic, I would rate at four stars。 After finishing the Farseer trilogy, it took me a good third of the book for it to catch hold of my interest。 I’m sure a good part of that was Fitz withdrawal, but I wanted more sparks in the beginning to draw me into all the new characters。 The second third did just that and I was well and truly hooke Liveship Traders TrilogySince this was a re-read of books I read nearly twenty years ago, I decided to review the three books together。 The first volume, Ship of Magic, I would rate at four stars。 After finishing the Farseer trilogy, it took me a good third of the book for it to catch hold of my interest。 I’m sure a good part of that was Fitz withdrawal, but I wanted more sparks in the beginning to draw me into all the new characters。 The second third did just that and I was well and truly hooked into both the characters and plotline。The second volume, The Mad Ship, would get five stars from me。 Well—Paragon! How someone could create a ship personality with such depth is well beyond me。 I love all chapters dealing with Paragon。 There are so many other great characters as well, Amber, Kennit, Malta to name a few of my favorites。 None are completely good or evil, so much gray, which is fantastic。 I love how Kennit wants to be such an evil tyrant but so many of his deeds end up helping people instead of harming them。One element which brought my enjoyment down a notch was all the political maneuvering in Bingtown between old and new traders, along with the other factions。 It was interesting, to a point, but I think if it had been streamlined a bit more I wouldn’t have gotten bored with the details。 I found myself skimming much of that debate after a while。The major plotlines were absolutely brilliant, in my opinion。 The history of serpents and dragons along with all the Rain Wild details were so well done。 After finishing the trilogy with Ship of Destiny, I still want more。 It’s time to leave Bingtown and the Pirate Isles behind and head back to the Six Duchies to see how Fitz is doing。 Highly recommend this entire set of stories。 。。。more

This is my review for all three books in the series。Wow!What a refreshing fantasy story。 By the end of the of the third book i had come to love (nearly) all of the pov characters。 I think it speaks in favor of Hobb's amazing writing skills that she managed to turn (view spoiler)[ Malta (hide spoiler)], the most annoying and hateable little piece of shit, into my absolute favorite character by the end。 THE CHARACTER DEVOLOPMENT。 Even the villain, (while very villainous) was extremely interesting This is my review for all three books in the series。Wow!What a refreshing fantasy story。 By the end of the of the third book i had come to love (nearly) all of the pov characters。 I think it speaks in favor of Hobb's amazing writing skills that she managed to turn (view spoiler)[ Malta (hide spoiler)], the most annoying and hateable little piece of shit, into my absolute favorite character by the end。 THE CHARACTER DEVOLOPMENT。 Even the villain, (while very villainous) was extremely interesting and multidimentional, that even though i hated him i still somehow couldn't help but root for him?But lets get to the characters as thats what i loved the most about the books (especially the female characters)The humans Althea: 9/10。 I loved and rooted for Althea since the very first chapter。 While a bit immature in the beginning her development is just perfect and i thing i was even more enraged than she was in the first book (fuck Kyle)Brascen: 9/10。 I don't think i have ever been more in love with a fictional man before in my life。Wintrow: 10/10。 It took me some time to warm up to Wintrow as i felt he was a bit whiny。 But ahem。。。 Then it became Fitzchivalry all over again and i just wanted to hold him and protect him。Malta: 100/10。 THIS FUCKING GIRL!!! (can't say much because spoilers)Reyn: 9/10。 Perfect for Malta, but also very interesting on his own。 I love his brainy and witty personality。Ronica: 10/10 the most badass grandma ever!Keffria: 10/10 the most badass mother ever! (with the best character developement)Kennit: 8/10。 Great villain。 I felt like the book wanted me to feel more sorry for him than i actually did though。Etta: 9/10。 Started out thinking she was shallow and didn't understand her at all。 But then it all made sense and my love for her grew and grew。 What a badass。Serilla: 7/10。 Great character。 Wish we saw more of her。Selden: 7/10。 Great character but only really stepped into the spotlight in book three。Kyle: 10/10。 THE MOST HATEABLE CHARACTER EVER。 But superbly written。 I think everyone knows a Kyle。 。。。more

Incredible。 So beautifully written。 Such emotions drawn out for each of the characters。 Wonderful and harrowing events mixed together, all provided huge impact。 The character progression has been a rollercoaster and unpredictable。 One of the best fantasy trilogies I’ve read。

These comments pertain to the whole Liveship Traders trilogy。I followed the author's advice (as posted in online discussions) and resisted the temptation to skip from the Farseer trilogy to the Tawny Man trilogy。 Having just finished the latter, I recommend doing the same。 The Liveship books contain key details that enrich the context for the Tawny Man story, giving myself as the reader a depth of perspective that I would have otherwise lacked, to fully appreciate the significance of the events, These comments pertain to the whole Liveship Traders trilogy。I followed the author's advice (as posted in online discussions) and resisted the temptation to skip from the Farseer trilogy to the Tawny Man trilogy。 Having just finished the latter, I recommend doing the same。 The Liveship books contain key details that enrich the context for the Tawny Man story, giving myself as the reader a depth of perspective that I would have otherwise lacked, to fully appreciate the significance of the events, perspectives, and revelations at the heart of the third trilogy。 In the true spirit of the Robin Hobb universe, where everything that is good and true is built upon the sharp-edged knowledge that comes only from fully lived experience。。。 short cuts are inadvisable。 They just don't lead to quite the same place as the full journey。Apart from that, the Liveship Traders trilogy is a gripping story of its own, with characters who grow and change like real people, rising to meet impossible challenges in separate storylines that clearly cannot stay separate forever。 By the time these threads tangle, the reader is fully invested in each one, and the whole becomes more than the sum of its parts。Another reviewer I came across online called Liveship "morally complex。" It is that, for sure。 But to this reader, psychology is more interesting than morality。。。 and there is plenty of substance there as well。A note about my personal rating system: I would give a book that I thoroughly enjoyed three stars, and I use the five star rating VERY sparingly。 。。。more

Diving deeper into the realm of the elderlings, one can only admire the world Robin Hobb has created。 It feels more and more like this world is indeed out there, hidden from the unimaginative eyes of modern people。 But Hobb has found a code, a key to bring new life into this everlasting parallel realm。 Thank you。
